Travel:
Before trains, travel was much more difficult. Journeys were muddy and slow, by horse, by stagecoach or on foot, and robbers terrorised the road. For those that could afford it, sailing by sea was the fastest and most comfortable. Most people lived in the countryside, and rarely left their village.

At home
Most homes now had electricity and running water. People could have their first built-in bathrooms and toilets, and buy the latest electric machines to make life easier: cookers, washing machines, fridges, vacuum cleaners, electric heaters. The rich didn’t need servants any more, whilst women everywhere were freed from the worst work of cleaning, cooking and heating the home.

People enjoyed newspapers, radio, dance halls and cinemas, but only the rich could afford televisions or telephones. Kids shocked their parents by listening to Rock’n’Roll music on their record players and wearing clothes in different styles. Girl’s skirts got shorter, whilst men’s hair got longer.

The dream of air travel became a reality, enabling many more people to experience holidays in other countries.
