EDITORIAL WORK IN PROGESS After the war, Britain set about rebuilding: millions of new modern homes to house for the homecoming soldiers and families that had lost their houses. Factories that no longer needed to supply weapons, tanks, aeroplanes, could now produce cars, washing machines, refrigerators, vacuum cleaners, that families could afford for the first time. |

| After World War II Even though Britain had won the second world war, the nation was in ruins. Its hold over the empire in India and Africa was crumbling. At home, bombs had destroyed millions of homes. Shortages of food and fuel made life miserable, especially during the bitterly cold winter of 1947. People were tired of the years of hardship they had been through. Just weeks after winning the war, Winston Churchill lost the 1945 election to the Clement Atlee’s Labour Party, that had promised to build a Britain that cared for the poor as well as the rich. . Atlee’s government created the ‘welfare state’ to provide support for those that couldn’t earn a living – the elderly, jobless, and sick. They set up the NHS, so everyone could get medical care, free, for the first time; They also took control of (‘nationalised’) important industries and services such as railways, electricity, mines to make sure that they were run fairly. In those days, many more people worked in factories than today, producing clothes, cars, ships, steel, coal, and much more. |

At home Most homes now had electricity and running water. People could have their first built-in bathrooms and toilets, and buy the latest electric machines to make life easier: cookers, washing machines, fridges, vacuum cleaners, electric heaters. The rich didn’t need servants any more, whilst women everywhere were freed from the worst work of cleaning, cooking and heating the home. People enjoyed newspapers, radio, dance halls and cinemas, but only the rich could afford televisions or telephones. Kids shocked their parents by listening to Rock’n’Roll music on their record players and wearing clothes in different styles. Girl’s skirts got shorter, whilst men’s hair got longer. The dream of air travel became a reality, enabling many more people to experience holidays in other countries. |
