EDITORIAL WORK IN PROGESS In AD 43, the Roman Emperor Claudius brought his army to Britain
to make the Roman Empire richer and stronger. Some of the things he might have wanted were cattle, gold coins, and people that could find and work with iron and tin. It took them a year to fight their way across the land, forcing people to obey him, killing everyone that refused, until the whole area that is now England and Wales was controlled by the Romans. We know a lot about the Romans, because they were the first people in Britain that wrote to each other about what they were doing, and they built buildings in stone that survive to this day.

| Before The Romans: It is very difficult to know much about people that lived in Britain before the Romans, because they had no written language. Clues come mostly from things we have found, such as pots, coins, weapons, jewellery, bones, and marks in the ground where buildings used to be. Other clues include place names, and what the Romans themselves wrote about these people. Before the Romans, many different tribes with many different languages lived in the different areas of Britain, often connected to similar tribes across the sea in Europe. People were almost all farmers growing their own food, making their own clothes, houses and furniture amongst themselves, buying and selling the things they made. They would have been used to fighting other tribes, but the solid, well-organised Roman army must have been terrifying to these scattered groups of warriors. |

Roman Britain The small army of Romans built a few forts and villages in places from which they could control all of these tribal areas at the same time. If you behaved well, became friends with the Romans, learned their language and their religion, enjoyed the new Roman fashions, food, lived like Romans, you might were more likely to do well. Ancient ways of the many different tribes of Britain slowly disappeared, as we all became Romans. This page is still under development.
